08.05.2015 – Conservatives have won a majority government with 331 elected seats in the House of Commons
We can rant and rave and say, ‘look at what you’ve voted into Britain. Look at what you've done to our government’ as much as we like. Yet the sad fact is that the Conservatives
have been voted in, and there is no changing this fact (at least not for another 5
years). We just need to accept that
Cameron is now running our government, and we have the joy of experiencing a
laissez-faire centric, neoliberal elitist party control our futures.
The people who voted Conservative
know what they’ve voted for, and the sad fact is that it appears that these
people might well lack empathy for people beyond themselves (not all of them,
but it sure appears this way). Everyone
deserves to have a good quality of life and have the chance to do well in
society. But this has now been stripped
away. Perhaps not right this minute, but
gradually it will be. Voting Tory means
the rich will inevitably get richer, and the poor will get poorer. But
evidently the results of this General Election prove that there are people who
believe that they will be richer and better off under the Tories.
You can decide whether this is a
delusional belief or not.
The people that voted Tory know what
is planned. They know about cuts to the
NHS, alongside its privatisation. They
know that there are going to be further cuts to welfare. There will be cuts to institutions and
policies that do not indulge the interests of the elite. Yes, there is voting in favour of your
personal interests (after all, individualism is a core feature of any party in
a *supposedly* liberal and democratic society).
But voting in favour of a party that negates your interests in health and
welfare? I suppose the people who
believe that they will be wealthier with no sense of social responsibility and
collective-conscience do not care about the NHS or our social welfare system.
Even sadder is that one half of these
Tory voters probably don't care about the poor / sick / disabled losing
benefits, while the other half probably think that it is what they deserve. They don’t care because this is what has
happened, and will continue to happen, with Conservatives leading the United
Kingdom:
- The privatisation of the NHS, as well as a reduction of the NHS budget
- Despite economic underfunding, there have been cuts to mental health services. 1 in 4 Britons will suffer from a mental health-related issue in their lifetime
- The number of food banks has risen, and looks set to increase from the current 56 to 445, in an attempt (and a meagre one at that) to keep up with spiralling levels of poverty
- There are predicted cuts of £12billion to the welfare state (but at least unemployment levels will diminish thanks to zero-hour contracts)
- And just hours after winning the majority, the DWP has announced plans to cut a scheme that helps disabled people into work
And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Who knows what else the Tories have hidden up their sleaze-ridden sleeves?
If you are part of the 7% who
attended private school, it is highly likely that you've never experienced economic insecurity and hardship as a result of an unfair contract or the cost of living increasing beyond the means of your disposable income; that you've never used the majority of the services you're in charge of securing. Thus you might well forget that we aren't all
'benefit scroungers', 'disinclined' or 'lazy'.
Austerity kills. Social conservativism kills. If you voted Tory, you supported a
capitalist, corporatist, anti-equality, pro-austerity, privatisation bourgeoisie
machine. So here is to another dismal
and damned five years, everyone.
